The influence of English Vocabulary Strategy on English Reading

摘要

英语词汇是英语学习的基础部分，然而它的重要性常常被忽略反而变成了学生学习英语的障碍。本文拟讨论英语词汇习得策略的重要性来帮助学生克服学习词汇的困难和提升阅读理解能力。首先，第一部分论述了词汇的重要性和词汇量的大小对于阅读理解的影响，并说明了在词汇学习过程中学生经常遇到的问题。第二部分主要介绍了国内外受到广泛认可的O’Malley&Chamot和Oxford所提出的第二外语学习策略体系。虽然词汇习得策略没有像语言学习策略那样受到大范围的关注但是国内外的语言学家已经注意到词汇的重要性以及词汇习得策略的重要性，因此第三部分介绍了Schmitt提出的词汇习得策略体系和国内词汇学家对词汇习得策略这一领域的研究。第四部分则是重点的举例说明关键词法、词缀法、语境和词块法词汇习得策略在词汇学习时的使用以及对于阅读理解的影响。最后一部分总结则是对于如何选择词汇习得策略和对词汇习得策略的使用进行了阐述。希望本篇文章可以为词汇的学习提供一点帮助。

Abstract

English vocabulary is the basic part of English learning. However, its importance is always ignored so that when students learn English, it becomes a big obscale for them; therefore, in this article I prepare to state vocabulary acquisition strategies’ importance for helping learners overcome difficulties of learning vocabulary and enhance reading comprehension ability. Firstly, in the first part I expound the significance of vocabulary and the influence of vocabulary quantity on reading comprehension. In a addition I present problems that students meet while learning English vocabulary. In the second chapter I mainly state the second language learning strategy systems presented by O’Malley&Chamot and Oxford, which are widely accepted by the whole world. Although vocabulary acquisition strategy attracts less attention than second language learning strategy, linguists both at hone and abroad have noticed the importance of vocabulary and vocabulary acquisition strategies. Hence in the third chapter I introduce the famous linguist Schmitt’s vocabulary acquisition strategy and national linguists’ researches in this field. Furthermore in the forth chapter I illustrate vocabulary acquisition strategies in detail. I state the usage of keyword method, affixation, contextualization, lexical chunks and their influences on reading comprehension. The conclusion in the last part is about the choice of vocabulary acquisition strategies and the use of vocabulary acquisition strategy. I hope that this article can provide some help to vocabulary learning.
