A Study on the Importance of Context in Chinese-English Translations

摘要

语境在文章的理解方面起着重要的作用。翻译是一项跨语言、跨文化的交际活动，不能脱离了语境。翻译者们也一致认为语境在中英文作品翻译过程中有着关键作用。因而准确翻译的基础应当需要正确了解语境。不管是文学作品的翻译还是生活当中的口译，都需要翻译者充分了解作品原本的语言和需要翻译的语言的文化背景，使作品的原有味道尽最大的可能得到保存，并且兼顾读者的阅读习惯和接受方式，将文本信息准确充分地转移到目的语之中。本文结合了大量国内外对语境的研究，比较了前人的一些研究成果，了解了翻译和语境之间的密切关系，并且用大量例子分别论证了翻译在不同语境下会有怎样的影响以及在翻译过程中应当如何注意到这些影响。也对语境和翻译之间的关系进行了详细的阐述，并且更进一步地阐明了语境在翻译中的重要作用。提出了在翻译中，不论是理论还是实践，都应该充分地重视语境的重要性。翻译的最重要的目的是要再现原文情境。

Abstract

Context has a significant function in understanding the article. Translation is a cross-language and cross-cultural activity for communication. Excellent works must put context in the first place. The key role in the process of English and Chinese translation is context which has always been the consensus of the translators. So the basis of correct translation is grasping the context accurately. Whether in literature translation or interpretation of the daily life, translators are all required to understand the meanings of original language and the background of culture. As far as possible to ensure the original flavor of the work and consider the reader's reading habits at the same time and transferred the text information to the target language accurately. This article summarizes the study of context domestic and overseas through these analysis of predecessors' results of their researches to ensure translation is closely associated with context. Through a lot of examples demonstrating that translation was influenced by the context and what can we do to grasp the impact in the process of translation. This paper expatiate the relationship between context and translation in detail, and further account for the vital function of context in translation. Whether in translation theory or in translation practice, context need to attach great importance. The most important purpose of translation is to reproduce the original situation of the works.
