A Study of Northanger Abbey from the Perspective of Female Gothic

摘要

简•奥斯汀作为19世纪早期著名女作家，在英国文学史上占据着重要位置。她的作品《诺桑觉寺》被认为是女性哥特小说的代表作之一。

女性哥特作为一种流行的文学体裁, 起源于英国，盛行于 18 世纪，以它特有的无法预知的危险以及恐怖的场景吸引人们的眼球。

本文将《诺桑觉寺》视为一部女性哥特经典，试图分析解读这部小说的女性哥特元素。通过细致巧妙的人物刻画以及大量融入的女性哥特元素，简•奥斯汀成功地烘托出作品关于女性反抗父权社会的主题。希望通过此次研究，读者能从新的角度更好地理解和欣赏这部经典小说。

Abstract

Jane Austen is a famous female writer in the early 19th century in Britain, occupying an important position in the history of English literature. Her masterpiece Northanger Abbey is regarded as one of the most typical female Gothic novels.

Female Gothic is a popular literary genre which derived from Britain and prevailed during the 18th century. It has appealed to people with its unforeseen dangers and dreadful scenes. 

This thesis tries to reread and interpret Northanger Abbey as a classic work of female Gothic through the analysis of its female Gothic elements. Through her delicate characterization and her involvement of a wide range of female Gothic elements, Jane Austen successfully reinforced the theme of the novel, i.e. women’s fight against patriarchy society. It is hoped that through this study readers can better understand and appreciate this classic novel from a new perspective.
