A Case Study of Speech Acts in Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Inaugural Addresses

摘要

就职演说是政治演说中的一种重要形式，在政治生活中扮演着重要的角色。本论文主要内容是研究富兰克林·罗斯福的四篇就职演说中所体现的言内行为、言外行为和言后行为。作者将着重研究其中的言外行为，并从两方面入手对其进行具体分析。一方面是关于言语行为的分类在所选演说中的具体体现，另一方面是关于所选就职演说中体现的言外之意的实现策略的相关内容。本论文的研究目的是通过该案例分析总结出就职演说中言语行为运用的一般规律，即言内行为、言外行为和言后行为是如何在就职演说中体现的，以及什么样的策略将有助于言外之意的实现。本论文再次说明了在就职演说中分析其言语行为的可行性。同时，也对言语行为理论可以研究的领域做出了一定的延伸。本论文有助于听者理解总统就职演说中的言语行为。在此基础上，帮助听者能够更好地理解就职演说。

Abstract

Inaugural address, as a typical genre of political speech, plays an important role in political life. The content of this thesis is mainly about the illustration of locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act reflected in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four inaugural addresses. Especially, the illocutionary act will be specifically studied in two parts. One part is about the classification of it in the addresses, the other is about the realization of illocutionary force. The primary objective of the study is to summarize the general rules of speech acts applied in the inaugural address. That is how the locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act reflect in the addresses and what devices contribute to the realization of illocutionary force. The thesis bears out the feasibility of Speech Act Theory in inaugural address. Simultaneously, it also extends the research range of Speech Act Theory. The thesis is helpful for the better understanding of inaugural address.
