A Study on Gender Inequality in Tenneessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire

摘要

田纳西·威廉斯是20世纪美国著名的剧作家。他获得了纽约戏剧奖和普利策奖。田纳西·威廉斯在著作《欲望号街车》中成功塑造了一位没落的受社会歧视的南方贵族小姐在备受父权文化和邪恶势力折磨并最终精神崩溃的女性形象。

对于剧中男女主人公的矛盾冲突以及布兰奇的疯癫与斯坦利的胜利，文章结合女性主义相关理论，以自由女性主义中女性意识和女权主义角度为立足点，从通过分析小说中话语权、经济地位、家庭地位等两性不平等状况研究文中的性别差异，男权家长式系统对女性的迫害以及两性不平等现象。通过女主人公疯癫结局与悲剧命运阐述自由女性主义理念，引出两性平等和谐这一指导理念，布兰奇只有在经济上和思想上真正获得独立，才可以掌控自己的命运与未来。

Abstract

Tennessee Williams is a famous playwright of the United States in the 20th century. He won the highest award ---the theater New York drama Award and the Pulitzer Prize. 

In his book A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams successfully shaped a southern Lady who eventually came to a mental breakdown by the torture of social discrimination, patriarchal culture and the evil. As for the conflict between Stanley and Blanche, i.e. the victor Stanley vs. insane Blanche, this thesis, based on the standpoint of liberal feminist in light of feminism correlation theories, works on words power, economic status and family status to make a research on the gender differences, persecution of female by patriarchal system and gender inequalities. Through the insane heroine and her tragedy destiny, it elaborates free feminism idea, and draws out the theme of gender equality and harmony. Blanche may control her own destiny and future only when she is economically and ideologically independent.
