A Study of Connectives in English Debate from the Perspective of Discourse Analysis

摘要

语篇分析理论认为，语言研究不应局限于句子层面，只分析句子结构，而应将语篇作为整体进行研究。从语篇分析角度出发，只有读者更好地理解辩手的语言体系和辩论的组织结构，才能准确地把握辩手的意图。在英语辩论中正确使用关联词可以 取得连贯性，使辩论逻辑清晰，并且引起观众的共鸣。本文从语篇分析的角度对英语辩论中的关联词进行研究。首先论文对英语关联词的定义、类别和功能进行阐述，然后基于分析“外研社”杯全国大学生英语辩论赛的语料，具体分析了辩手们对关联词使用得当以及不当的例子,并对英语辩论中如何有效使用关联词给出了建议。通过对关联词的研究，论文旨在于帮助英语辩手们更好地认识关联词的类别和作用，学习在辩论中如何恰当地使用关联词以更流畅地发表自己的看法，有效地论证自己的观点，增强自身的说服力。

Abstract

According to the discourse analysis theories, language study should not be limited to the sentence level, merely analyzing the sentence structures, but should treat the discourse as a whole. From the perspective of discourse analysis, only having a better understanding of the debaters’ language system and the organization of debates, can the audience make clear debaters’ intention. Proper uses of connectives in English debate can achieve coherence, make the logic clear and increase the resonance with the audience. This paper conducts a study on connectives in English debate from the perspective of discourse analysis. Firstly, it presents the concept of discourse analysis and also provides a brief introduction to the definition, category and function of connectives. Then based on the mini-corpus of FLTRP cup national college students debate English, the author analyzes the examples of debaters’ proper use and misuse of connectives specifically and gives some suggestions on how to use connectives effectively in English debate. Through analysis and discussion, the paper aims to help English debaters understand the categories and functions of connectives better and learn how to use the connectives in the debate to express their views efficiently, demonstrate their views effectively and enhance their persuasiveness.
