On the Application of Vague Language in English Economic News

摘要

一直以来，语言使用者追求的是所用语言的准确和清晰表达。但不可否认的是语言中存在很多模糊的语言，这也是交际中的普遍现象。随着时代的发展，科技的进步，新闻对人们的生活日益重要。我们知道，新闻报道是对外部世界信息及时、客观、公正的反映，它强调语言的准确性和精确性。但是笔者在英语经济新闻中却发现了模糊语的身影。为了探究原因，笔者阅读了大量经济新闻报道，择出其中存在的模糊语，对此进行了研究。本文主要就英语经济新闻中模糊语的应用进行了阐述。作者首先介绍了模糊语的定义，其次分析了国内外学者对于模糊语，以及对经济新闻中模糊语的研究现状，然后结合英语经济新闻中模糊语的应用实例，分析了模糊语在英语经济新闻中的分类、使用的特点和作用，最后给出了相应的建议并进行了总结。通过研究模糊语在英语经济新闻中的应用，不仅可以帮助记者在新闻撰稿中更恰当得体地使用模糊语，还能帮助广大商务读者更好地理解英语经济新闻中出现的模糊语，理解记者使用模糊语的目的。

Abstract

Language users usually pursue the accuracy and preciseness of expression. But it is undeniable that vague language exists in our daily life, and this is the common phenomenon. With the rapid development of science and technology, news is playing an important role in people’s lives. As we all know that news report is a timely, objective and fair reflection of the outside world. It emphasizes accuracy and preciseness. But vague language exists in English economic news. This paper mainly discusses the application of vague language in English economic news. In the first place, the paper introduces the definition of vague language. Secondly, the paper makes a brief literature review of vague language at home and abroad, and analyzes the recent status of research in vague language. After that, the paper focuses on the application of vague language applied in English economic news with examples. It also analyzes the characteristics of vague language used in economic news, further and studies the functions of the application of vague language. In the end, the paper makes a summary and offers some suggestions for both journalists and English economic news readers. The study of the application of vague language in economic news cannot only do some help for journalists to use vague language more appropriately in news writing, but can also help the broad masses of business readers better understand the vague language in economic news and the reason for the use of vague language.
