A Brief Study of TV Series Titles and Their Translation from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

摘要

在全球化浪潮席卷下的今天，随着国际文化交流的愈加频繁，电视剧成为不同文化之间交流的直接且高效的文化传播载体。电视剧片名往往是人们了解一部电视剧的开始。尤其在当今信息爆炸时代，片名就是广告，好的片名不仅能向观众传递电视剧内容、体裁等相关信息，还能激发观众的想象力和好奇心，最终将商业利润最大化，因此对片名翻译的研究很有必要。本文以弗米尔提出的目的论作为理论基础，在前人研究成果的基础上对电视剧片名进行进一步的研究与例证，旨在说明目的论对电视剧片名的指导作用，并试图揭示基于目的论的电视剧片名翻译的最佳方法。本文第一部分是对翻译目的论及其四个指导原则的介绍；第二部分归纳电视剧片名的特点及作用；第三部分从目的论的视角分析目的论在电视剧片名翻译中的具体应用。

Abstract

Nowadays, globalization spreads the world. With the increasingly strengthening of international cultural exchange, TV series has became the most direct and effective method to communicate between different cultures. Thus, TV series translation has been flourishing. The title is generally the beginning to know about a TV series, especially in this era where the information explodes. Titles are exactly advertisements. Good titles can not only provide the audience with the contents and genre of the TV series, but also engage audience’s imagination and curiosity, and ultimately maximize the commercial profits. Therefore, studying title translation is of great necessity. Based on the Skopos Theory put forward by Vermeer, this paper investigates the titles of TV series on the basis of previous research achievements. Apart from introduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of three parts. The first part of the thesis is the introduction of Skopos Theory and its four guiding principles; the second part focuses on the features and functions of TV series titles; the third part analyzes the application of Skopos Theory in TV series title translation. The object of this study is to illustrate the guiding effect of the Skopos Theory on the translation of the TV series title. In this study, an attempt was made to reveal the best method for translating TV series titles.
