Female Awakening in the Jazz Age——A Study of Feminine Images in Tender is the Night

摘要

菲茨杰拉德是美国20世纪20年代著名小说家，被誉为“爵士时代的桂冠诗人”和“二十年代的编年史家”。1934年出版的《夜色温柔》堪称是菲茨杰拉德最优秀的作品之一，这本小说讲述了年轻美国医生迪克的爱情悲剧和理想幻灭，揭露了当时美国社会中上流阶层的冷漠，虚伪和道德堕落。作者通过巴比、尼克尔、罗斯玛丽和迪克等人物的形象刻画，反映了上流社会腐败的金钱观和生活方式。这本小说向我们揭示了繁华之后金钱的腐蚀性，温柔夜色之后现实的残忍性。

本文以女性主义为视角，通过对《夜色温柔》中三位女性人物的研究，分析小说中女性觉醒的先进性与局限性。从而帮助读者对这部作品中的女性主义有一个全面的解读和认识，并且开始对女性地位进行多方面的思考。

Abstract

F﹒Scott Fitzgerald is a well-known American novelist in 1920s, who is widely acclaimed as “the laureate of the Jazz Age” and “the chronicler in the twentieth century”. His works, Tender is the Night was published in 1934, which is one of his excellent works. The novel tells the story of an American doctor Dick Diver’s love tragedy and disillusionment of ideals, revealing the fact that the upper class of American society is indifferent, hypocritical and morally degenerated. The images of Baby, Nicole, Rosemary and Dick depicted by Fitzgerald reflect the corrupt money value and ridiculous life style in upper class. This novel reflects the philosophy that the prosperity veiled the corrupt influence of money on spirit; and the night was tender but the reality was cruel.

This thesis analyses the novel from the perspective of feminism. It makes the study of the representative three heroines, and then comments on the advancement and limitation about female awakening. Readers will have a comprehensive understanding of feminine ideas in this novel and begin to think more about females’ status.
