A Contrastive Study of Chinese and English Taboo Words in Cross-cultural Communication

摘要

禁忌语作为一种社会语言现象，它涉及广、影响深, 正引起越来越多学者的关注和兴趣。禁忌语的产生、使用与不同民族文化、社会习俗等方面相互制约并渗透。本文从中英文化角度出发，来研究禁忌语在交际中的作用，同时探解中英由于文化不同而引起的禁忌语的差异。通过这篇论文，希望能帮助人们分析理解英汉语言及文化中的禁忌，发掘它们背后的深层原因，从而提高学习者中英交流理解的能力，促使他们交流沟通顺畅。

本文共分四章。第一章是引言，主要介绍了禁忌语的定义并指出它的功能。第二章是对中英语言中的禁忌在异同上的比较，以语音、词汇为基点进行对比研究。第三章从个人、社会、文化方面对在使用禁忌语会产生冲突的原因进行分析。第四章阐述了一些回避禁忌语产生的方法。

简言之，对禁忌语最好的方法不是去回避它，而是去深入了解它，使读者对禁忌语有更深刻系统的了解，做到容己之心容人。

Abstract

As a kind of social linguistic phenomenon, taboo, which is widely and deeply influenced, is attracting more and more scholars' attention and interest. Its production, use and different national culture, social customs and other aspects are interact and interpenetrate with one another. From the cultural perspective, we study the effect of taboo language in communication. At the same time, we explore the differences of taboos caused by the cultural differences. Through this paper, I hope to help people analyze and understand the language and cultural taboos in English and Chinese, and explore the underlying reasons behind them, so as to improve the ability of learners to communicate in English and Chinese and encourage them to communicate smoothly.

This article consists of four chapters.The first chapter is an introduction, mainly introducing the definition of taboo language and pointing out its functions.The second chapter focuses on the similarities and differences in English and Chinese taboos, in pronunciation, vocabulary as a basis for comparison.The third chapter analyzes the causes of the conflict from the use of taboo in terms of personal, social and cultural aspects. The fourth chapter introduces some ways to avoid conflicts in using taboos in cross-cultural communication.

In short, the best way is not to prevent it, but to understand it, so that the reader has a more profound understanding of the taboo language, and they will have the heart of tolerance.
