Aesthetic Representation in Yuen Ren Chao’s Translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

摘要

中国文学翻译有卓越成就的当属在五四时期，白话文、方言等文学写作方式开始为文学大家接受，众多学者纷纷开始研究文学作品。然而学者对文学翻译的热忱度远低于文学创作。真正从一个文学体裁入手，深入研究并将翻译理念理论化、实际化的学者寥寥无几。

由于地理，宗教，文化和习俗的差异，源语与目标语翻译时并没有明确的等同性，译者需要对原来的表述进行适当的修改，以更好的传达原文。即翻译旨在传达源文字的艺术美。学者对文学翻译难题也感到束手无策。而翻译大家赵元任先生长期致力于中国文学翻译，为翻译理论化、实际化作出了卓越的贡献。

本文以赵元任译作《爱丽丝漫游奇境记》为例，具体介绍审美的概念、特征和意义，随后阐述赵元任先生的主要事迹和翻译史，而后分析翻译美学在儿童文学翻译中的运用。作为一位中国杰出翻译家，赵元任先生如何在中国儿童文学翻译作品中实现审美的再现，为文学翻译研究提供一定的借鉴意义。

Abstract

Chinese literature translation has outstanding achievements in the May Fourth Movement period, scholars started to accept the vernacular, dialect and other literary writing methods for literature translation, many of them had begun to study literary works. However, scholars’ enthusiasm for literary translation was much lower than that for literary creation. Very few scholars truly concentrated on the translation from the perspective of literary genre, and did in-depth study to actualize the concept of translation theory.

Due to the differences in geography, religion, culture and customs, there is no definite equivalence between the source language and the target language, and translators need to make alterations to the original expressions in order to better convey the original. Translation seeks to transmit the artistic beauty of the source text. Scholars also felt helpless about problems of literary translation. Yuen Ren Chao had committed to the translation of Chinese literature for a long time, and made great contributions to the theory and even practice of translation.

This paper introduces the definition, object and significance of aesthetic representation, and then elaborates on the biography and literary translation of Yuan Ren Chao, and finally analyzes the translation tactics adopted by Yuan Ren Chao in translating Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. By doing this, Yuan Ren Chao demonstrated how he realized the aesthetic representation in the translation of children’s literature in translation, and provided some reference for the study of literary translation.
