摘要

《马丁·伊登》是美国作家杰克·伦敦最具代表性的作品之一，这部小说被广泛认为是美国20世纪最具社会思想的一部小说。这部半自传的小说是通过对主人公马丁·伊登悲剧一生的描写，真实反映当时的生活状况。小说讲述了男主人公马丁·伊登由穷困的年轻水手通过自身努力而一跃成为著名作家并最终投海自尽的故事，而主人公最后自杀的原因是理解这部作品的一个关键。本文旨在从事业和爱情理想的幻灭，阶级差异以及个人主义三方面来探讨马丁·伊登自杀悲剧的原因,以此来更好地理解作品。

Abstract

Martin Eden was one of the representative works of Jack London and was widely acknowledged as the most leading work on social ideological content at the beginning of the 20th century in America. As a semi-autobiography, based on the description of Martin Eden’s tragic life, the story revealed the real life in that period. The novel depicted the hero Martin Eden, a poor young sailor who became a famous writer through his own efforts but eventually threw himself into the sea. The key to understand the whole novel is the causes of Martin Eden’s suicide. This thesis aims to explore the causes of the tragedy of Martin Eden’s suicide from three aspects: disillusionment of love and creation ideal, class differences and individualism.
