摘要

《秘密花园》是美国作家弗朗西丝·霍奇森·伯内特最著名的儿童文学作品之一。小说里，玛丽是一个身体和心理上都有缺陷的小女孩。她的身体本就瘦弱，再加上父母关爱的缺失，使她形成了一个扭曲的性格，不肯主动与外界交流。但她在发现秘密花园后，便开始了对自身的反省，之后性格得以完善。本论文探讨了玛丽的成长过程，包括她在成长中的顿悟，对新环境的适应，对自身缺陷的完善和对完美性格的追求。身边的朋友都对她的成长产生了重要影响。论文认为，秘密花园的复兴象征着玛丽成功地抛弃旧自我，获得心理上的成熟，最终成长为一个善良、朝气蓬勃的女孩。

Abstract

The Secret Garden written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is one of the most famous children literary works. In this novel, Mary is a little girl who has mental and physical deficiencies. She is weak and thin. Besides, she is lack of parents’ care and love, which makes her form a distorted character and never proactively communicate with the outside world during her formative years. However, after finding the secret garden, she begins to search her own heart. Later, her personality gets improved. This thesis mainly explores the growing processes of Mary, including her sense of introspection, adaption to her new environment, constant self-improvement and the pursuit of perfect personality. Her friends have great influence on her growth. This thesis holds that the rejuvenation of the garden symbolizes that Mary deserts the old self successfully and gains the emotional maturity. Finally, she has grown into a nice and energetic girl.
