An Analysis of the Gentleman Images In Great Expectations 

摘要

《远大前程》是英国批判现实主义作家狄更斯所著的长篇小说。本文主要就《远大前程》中的绅士形象进行分析。通过分析，我们不但可以了解维多利亚时代的绅士文化，还能够思考狄更斯笔下的绅士形象批判并揭露了什么。所谓的“绅士生活”并没有让主人公皮普获得快乐，对朋友的疏离，对金钱的挥霍，由于无所事事产生的空虚感，反而增加了他的痛苦。同时狄更斯用详尽的笔墨描写了两位披着绅士外衣的恶棍。通过描写，使他们的外貌和行为形成强烈的反差，批判了黑暗的资本主义制度，揭露了社会恶毒横行，生灵涂炭的现实和金钱的腐败本质，赞扬了高尚的道德行为和务实的工作精神。

Abstract

Great Expectations is written by Charles Dickens who is one of the greatest critical realism writers. This thesis mainly analyzes the gentleman images in Great Expectations. Through analysis, we could not only understand the gentleman culture in Victorian era, but we will reflect upon what Dickens wants to criticize and explore. The so-called “gentleman’s life” does not make Pip happy. On the contrary, alienation from friends, the squander of money and the feelings of emptiness due to his extravagant life greatly increase his pain. Dickens also describes two villains in detail who dresses the coat of “gentleman”. Through describing the sharp contrast of their appearance and behaviors, Dickens criticizes the dark capitalism and reveals the vicious realism and corrosive nature of money. At the same time, he praises the noble moral behaviors and practical spirit.
