The Comparison of Phatic Communion in Daily Conversation Between English and Chinese

Abstract
In our daily life, conversation is very important. We all use such small, seemingly meaningless expression—phatic communion to maintain relations. Many studies on phatic communion were largely analyzed from the perspective of social linguistics, functional linguistics and so on. But less has been done from the perspective of pragmatics. This thesis tries to analyze phatic communion from the theories of pragmatics, Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle, and introduces the differences of phatic communion under the American and Chinese cultures combining with daily examples. It finds that there are the same in functions and differences in forms and contents. It can owe to the difference of the cultural systems between America and China, the former belongs to low-context culture, and the latter belongs to high-context culture. It specifically explains why people have different phatic communions from the aspects of social value and psychology, to notice that culture plays an important role in people’s conversations.
