The Deconstruction And Reconstruction Of American Black Females: A Case Of Recitatif

Abstract
American black female writer Toni Morrison’s only short story Recitatif quite explicitly manifests the deconstruction and reconstruction of modern American black females. The story narrates a friendship of a black girl and a white girl from childhood to womanhood, helping black people a lot to envisage history and to build future. Embodied in the whole story is the black girl’s racial consciousness, struggling deconstruction and reconstruction with the white girl. This paper attempts to probe into Morrison’s thoughts about black people’s and black culture’s way out. This paper firstly gives a brief introduction of Toni Morrison and the short story Recitatif. Then it points out the black female’s transformations from childhood to the following reunions, including awareness of racial consciousness and complicated inner struggle of the black woman, depicting a tough process of self-deconstruction when faced with friendship and ethnic issue. Finally, this paper records the reconciliation of the two protagonists and expresses Morrison’s positive attitude towards cultural blending. It draws the conclusion that Toni Morrison is always calling for ethnic equality and cultural integration.
