On Ken Liu’S Alternative Use Of Domestication And Foreignization In The Three-Body Problem

摘要

2015年,科幻小说《三体》摘得雨果最佳小说奖，将中国科幻小说引向世界舞台。小说能够摘得此次世界级大奖，译者刘宇坤功不可没。原著中以中国特殊的历史时期---文化大革命为背景。本文将采用案例法探究译者刘宇坤如何交替使用归化异化翻译策略处理小说中的文化因素。通过分析刘宇坤在翻译中所使用的归化异化翻译策略以及两种翻译策略中哪种策略更能成功的将中国文化传入西方世界，本文得出结论，异化策略在文化传播中更有效。本文对翻译策略的讨论，有助于译者在翻译中国文学作品时选择合适的翻译策略，更加有效地将中国文化引向世界。

Abstract

In 2015, The Three-body Problem, a science fiction novel, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel, which brings China’s science fiction onto the world stage. The Translator, Ken Liu, makes great contribution to the success of The Three-body Problem wining global award. The original work encompasses a great number of unique Chinese cultural elements. The present paper will take case study to show how Ken Liu, the translator, alternatively uses domestication and foreignization to deal with those cultural elements. By analyzing the translation strategies Ken Liu employed in his translation of the cultural elements of the novel and discussing what kind of strategy can successfully serves his aim to disseminate Chinese culture in the Western world, this thesis concludes that the foreignization strategy is more effective in promoting cultural transmission. This paper will offer guidance to the translator’s choice on translation strategy in the process of translating Chinese literature work, helping to bring Chinese culture into the western in a more effective way.
