A Study Of Body Language From The Perspective Of Face Theory In Presidential Campaign:Based On Video Analysis Of Donald Trump And Hilary Clinton’S Presidential Debates

Abstract
Body language has a wide application in and strong implication on everyday communication. Body language can facilitate verbal language to express the speakers’ true feelings and to demonstrate their real intentions more clearly. “mianzi”, a concept that exists in all cultures, also plays a pivotal part in communication, both formal and informal. Thus, it is of great guiding significance to study body language from the perspective of face theory.
This study analyzes the three 2016 American presidential election television debates. The recorded video will display the participants’ direct reactions, which clearly demonstrate their true feelings and their techniques to save their own face and to threaten their opponent’s face.
This study adopts the quantitative method to examine the video data. The author first gives out the distribution of facial expressions and body gestures, two of the most predominant components of body language. Then upon analyzing and comparing the statistics, the author summarizes some of the major characteristics of the body language in the debate, and further lists the functions of these body languages in terms of face-saving and face-threatening.
Following findings are presented in the study. First, the distribution of facial expressions and body gestures of the two candidates are figured out through careful analysis of the video data. Second, it is found out that the body language in the 2016 American presidential election television debates has independent meanings, context-dependent meanings, personal characteristics, environmental implications. Third, after relating the context, the author finds that certain body language in the debate has the function of repeating, reinforcing, supplementing and replacing verbal language, both for saving face and for threatening face.
