摘要

《红字》诞生于十九世纪的美国，是十九世纪影响最大的浪漫主义小说家那撒尼尔·霍桑的代表作。小说主要讲述了已婚年轻妇女海斯特·白兰因丈夫罗杰·奇林沃斯在海上遇难失，并误认为丈夫死亡而后爱上丁梅斯代尔牧师并生下一女而被迫佩戴代表通奸意思的字母——红字A。小说通过象征主义和丰富的人物描写，表达了守法、原罪、犯罪的主题。本论文则在理解象征主义和小说主题的基础上，以海斯特和丁梅斯代尔之间的爱情为视角，以圣经中“母亲”原型为理论基础，展示海斯特在母亲和爱人两种角色上各自的表现、变化和融合，分析海斯特在爱情中对丁梅斯代尔牧师的态度、行为和影响，最后得出本论文的主题，即海斯特在爱情中伟大的如母爱般的付出，她给予丁梅斯代尔名声的保护，勇敢的力量和方向的指引，正如一个母亲守护着犯错的孩子一般，没有责备、没有放弃、没有远离，只有默默守护、爱护和解救.

Abstract

The Scarlet Letter A is a masterpiece of Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was the most important romantic novelist in the 1900s in America. The novel tells a story that a young married woman, Hester Prynne fell in love with a young priest Dimmesdale and gave birth to a daughter because she wrongly thought her husband Roger had died in the sea. As a result, she was punished to wear a Scarlet Letter A by the government. Hawthorne used symbolism and abundant character description to explore themes of legalism, sin and guilt. This paper takes the love between Hester and Dimmesdale as an angle of view and the archetype of “mother” as theoretical foundation to show the behavior, psychological change and role confluence of Hester as a mother and a lover based on the understanding of the theme of the novel. And then the writer will analyze Hester’s attitude towards Dimmesdale during the seven years as well as her influence on Dimmesdale in her love. Lastly, here comes the theme of this paper-----Hester was like a mother when she loved Mr. Dimmesdale; she protected his fame and status and gave him the power of being brave and the direction of the life. She was like a mother who was always accompanying her child who did something wrong. There is no blame, no deserting and no far distance but watching, loving and saving.
