Undisciplined Female Prisoner In Affinity

Abstract
Sarah Waters is a contemporary British writer. Affinity is one of her representative works. It tells a love story commingled with conspiracy between Margaret Prior who is a Lady Visitor to Jail Millbank and Selina Dawes who is a spirit-medium. This novel deals with the theme of lesbianism. The heroine with typical femininity struggles to survive in the family and society which are dominated by males. This paper attempts to probe into the plot of escape from the standpoint of feminism and discipline. This paper analyzes the phenomenon that the female inside the jail and outside the jail both live under observation at the Victorian Age. Both of them want to escape from the observation. However, Margaret is relatively physically free but mentally bound while Selina is physically bound but mentally free. This paper analyzes their differences from the perspective of the operation of power, discipline and punish, and finally draws a conclusion that those who are disciplined will never escape from the observation while those who refuse to be disciplined can escape from the observation.
Key words: escape; feminism; discipline; panopticon
