Character Analysis of Ono in An Artist Of The Floating World

摘要

英籍日裔作家石黑一熊一直是当代著名小说家，他的作品一直以细腻优美的文笔为世人所称赞并曾多次为他赢得世界级文学奖项。《浮世画家》是石黑一熊早期作品之一，其故事背景设定为第二次世界大战后的日本，故事的主人公也是曾在二战中投身于军国主义的浮世绘画家。本文通过文本分析法深入分析了主人公小野曾二的人物性格，并通过小野一生的发展深入讨，以角色理论为理论背景，以期从新的角度对人物性格进行解读。

本文从人物天生的性格特征和后天环境对他造成的影响两个方面分析角色塑造。通过对小野不同的先赋角色及后制角色的分析指出小野最后通过自己对父亲这个角色的追寻及回归最终实现了自己人性的复苏，精神的忏悔。

结语部分概括了小野一生从先赋角色到自制角色的转变和他从军国主义追随者到忏悔者的变化以及他回归人性真实的结局.对战争的忏悔并不容易,但是人类在面临困境的打击之下还有勇气去对自己的过失忏悔是值得肯定的。

Abstract

Ishiguro Kazuo, a British novelist of Japanese descent, is always a famous contemporary novelist. With the fine and beautiful writing as well as gentle and subtle language, his works have been praised by readers and also repeatedly won him many world-class literature awards. An Artist of the Floating World is one of the early works of Ishiguro Kazuo. The story background is set in Japan after World War II and the protagonist is a Ukiyo painter who had been engaged in militarism in World War II. Through the text analysis and the characterization of the protagonist Masuji Ono, this paper analyzes the whole life of Ono. With “the theory of role” as theoretical background, it hopes to interpret the personality of character from a new perspective. This paper probes into the shaping of role from two perspectives, one is the natural instinct and the other is the influence from environment. Through the analysis of Ono’s different ascriptive roles and achieving roles, it points out that Ono finally realizes the recovery of humanity and spirit atonement through his pursuit of father's role.

The conclusion summarizes the paper for it sums up Ono's life transition from the ascriptive role to the achieving role, his change from the militarist follower to the confessor as well as the end of humanity recovery. It is not easy to admit atonement for war but the courage to apologize for his past mistake is worth being confirmed.
