On Class Tension Between British Aristocracy And Middle Class After Wwii: Taking The Little Stranger As An Example

摘要

《小小陌生人》是英国当代女作家萨拉·沃特斯的第五部小说，小说以乡村医生法拉第的视角，讲述了英国百厦庄园艾瑞斯家族二战后难以维系贵族生活，困守古宅艰难度日，以及其后发生的一系列诡秘莫测的事件。本文基于文本细读，剖析其中典型的阶级张力，主要关注二战后各种原因所致的贵族没落，以及由此带来的贵族阶级与中产阶级关系的变化。论文主要以马克思·韦伯社会分层理论为理论支柱，聚焦小说中人物的财产、地位和权力的变化，试图探究二战后英国贵族阶级与中产阶级关系发生转变的原因，予以这部作品应有的学术观照。

Abstract

The Little Stranger is the fifth novel of British contemporary writer Sarah Waters. From the perspective of the country doctor Faraday, the novel tells a story about the Ayres who own a large house, the Hundreds Hall, but cannot afford to maintain it after WWII and suffers from the loss of aristocratic life and a series of supernatural happenings in the house. Based on the close reading, this paper analyzes the typical class tension in the novel, mainly focusing on the decline of British aristocracy which is caused by various factors after WWII, and the consequent changes in the relations between British aristocracy and the middle class. With Marx Weber's social stratification theory, this paper tries to explore the reasons for the relation changes between British aristocracy and the middle class after the WWII from the perspective of wealth, power and status, giving this novel an academic observation.
