Reconstruction Of Celie’S Subjective Selfhood: From Significant Others’ Perspective-----An Analysis Of The Color Purple

Abstract
The Color Purple depicts how the leading character, Celie, changes from a good-for nothing black woman who just knows obedience under male chauvinism to a new woman who has independent personality fighting spirits. This paper introduces the psychological concept of "significant others" to parse Celie’s growth under people’s help. Her sister Nettie teaches her words and culture; her daughter-in law Sofia makes her realize that women need to fight under the control of men. Her husband’s lover Shug brings her mental energy and helps her get rid of past life. Finally Celie establishes her own business and goes out of the shadow. It is the sisterhood which has helped Celie to reconstruct her subjective selfhood. The writer concludes that black women should fight actively for themselves in an unequal society.
Key words: The Color Purple; selfhood; fight; sisterhood
