Humanity In Darkness And Blood-A Case Study Of The Bloody Chamber

Abstract
The famous English writer Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber is adapted from The Blue Beard, a French fairy tale. Instead of feminism, this paper studies the humanity in darkness and blood on the basis of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytical theory. According to it, one’s personality consists of three parts: id, ego and superego. Desires and wants are hidden in “id”, and “ego” is governed by the reality. The “superego” stands for ethics. This paper, at first, probes into the darkness and blood shown in the cruel hero. The heroine’s mother and her lover, who embody great humanity are studied next. Then, this paper makes a study of the heroine about how she, under the instruction of great humanity, discovers her “ego” within darkness and blood. The analysis will help to understand that the cruel hero represents “id”, while the heroine’s mother and her lover are a symbol of “superego”. More importantly, the heroine is “id” at first, then changes to “ego”, and at last, to “superego”. At the end of this paper, it demonstrates relationships among “id”, “ego” and “superego” displayed within these characters. “Id” stands in contrast to “superego” and “ego” tries to maintain the balance among “id”, “superego” and the reality. This leads to the conclusion that Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber serves as an organic whole of humanity.
