摘要

伊丽莎白·盖斯凯尔（1810-1865）是英国维多利亚时期一位著名的女性作家。随着女性主义和工业革命的快速发展，英国人民的价值观发生了很大的变化。作为一位女性作家，盖斯凯尔夫人非常重视女性的生活状况，并且在作品中表现出了对女性的尊重和对平等的追求。因此，本文将会通过分析《南方与北方》中女性的婚姻状况以及盖斯凯尔夫人对不同婚姻的态度来探讨其婚姻观。

介绍部分是对盖斯凯尔夫人生平和小说《南方与北方》的简单介绍，以及国内外对盖斯凯尔夫人和小说《南方与北方》的研究的简要的文献综述。论文的第一和第二章是主体。第一章主要探讨《南方与北方》中女性的传统的婚姻观。第二章通过分析盖斯凯尔夫人对作品中不同婚姻的态度，探讨作者的婚姻观，并且最终得出盖斯凯尔夫人认为良好的婚姻应该以共同的价值观为基础，而不是财富或者地位。第三章简要地分析了当时女性婚姻观形成的原因，主要分为直接因素和间接因素。结论部分再次论述了盖斯凯尔夫人作品中所体现的婚姻观以及她本人的婚姻观和对女性的尊重。

Abstract

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) is a famous British female writer in Victorian Age. With the rapid development of Feminism and the Industrial Revolution, the values of British people were transformed drastically. As a female writer, Mrs. Gaskell puts much emphasis on women’s living conditions and shows her respect for women and pursuit of equality. Therefore, this paper will probe into Mrs. Gaskell’s marriage values by analyzing the marriage conditions of women in North and South and Mrs. Gaskell’s attitude to various kinds of marriage. 

The introduction offers a general introduction to Mrs. Gaskell, North and South, and a simple literature review. The first and second chapter are the main body of this paper. The first chapter mainly analyzes the traditional female’s marriage values of women in North and South. The second chapter probes into the author’s marriage values by analyzing Mrs. Gaskell’s attitude to various kinds of marriage in her work, and finally draws the conclusion that Mrs. Gaskell believes a fine marriage should be based on common values rather than property or status. The third chapter generally discusses the reasons for the formation of female marriage values, including direct factor and indirect factor. The conclusion gives a further discussion on the marriage values in Mrs. Gaskell’s work, her own marriage values and her respect for women.
