目的原则是廖美珍教授提出的。他对法庭互动话语的分析，得出正是目的与目的的关系决定了言者与闻者对话内容，以及所采取的策略和互动模式。作者选取《了不起的盖茨比》作为研究语料来证明目的原则的广泛适用性。本文研究了这部小说中某些人物的冲突对话。目的原则含有自己的话语分析模式，对话语分析有七个视角，包括：目的分析，目的和语言策略，目的和话语连贯性,目的系统分析,特殊目的分析,目的权力与地位，目的的实现。本文根据目的原则的话语分析模式来分析小说中的对话。作者运用定量分析和定性分析相结合的方式去分析语料库。通过对语料库的分析，发现目的原则也适用于在冲突小说中的人物对话分析。基于此并得出以下结论：（1）说话人有两种目标结构，即自上而下和自下而上,这两种话语的结构决定了不同言者的目的和目的的实现。（2）言者和闻者在实现目标的过程中采用了不同的语言策略。（3）由于谈话主题启动和语调之间的不平衡，发现话题发起者在沟通中具有更多的主动性和更强的地位。（4）言者发起话题的技巧对目标的实现起决定性的作用。但是，闻者是否能够准确地响应言者的目的也影响会话能否继续进行。目的原则为语用学研究提供了新的研究途径，也为我们理解文学作品提供了一个独特的视角。
