Abstract
The science fiction The Dark Forest is the second volume of The Three-Body Problem trilogy written by Liu Cixin. In 2016, The Dark Forest was translated into English and published in America. It deals with the struggle between Earth and Trisolaris.
Comparing Chinese version of The Dark Forest with its English version on the basis of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this thesis studies both external vocabulary information and internal cultural message. Through the comparison between the translation and the author’s intentions, the meaning of the text and the cultural characteristics in the original, this paper points out the degree to which the application of faithful representation principle is applied in the practical translation, the problems that should be concerned, and the ability that should be possessed during translation.
Keywords: The Dark Forest, Liu Cixin, Joel Martinsen, functional equivalence theory, faithful representation
