“To Divide is Not to Take Away”——On Shelley’s View of Love

摘要

爱是人类最珍贵、最纯洁和最神圣的情感，真爱更是可遇而不可求。“真爱不同于黄金和泥土，分享不会使之减少”，雪莱在《心之灵》中如是写道。雪莱相信精神财富是取之不尽用之不竭的，我们可以在各种场合尽情表达我们的感情。我们表达感情越充分，我们所要表达的感情就越丰富。本文将从雪莱的生活背景出发，结合雪莱的作品来谈雪莱所崇尚的爱情观。文章的第一部分介绍了雪莱的生活背景以及其在伊顿公学的求学经历。他所处的环境和经历都对雪莱的爱情观产生了极大的影响，也为他爱情观的形成奠定了基础。文章的第二部分详细描述了雪莱的几段感情经历，从雪莱的两段婚姻中，不难看出雪莱一直在践行着他的爱情观。第三部分着重分析了雪莱的两首爱情诗，《心之灵》和《致——》。最后对雪莱的爱情观进行了总结，并揭示了它对后人的启示作用。

Abstract

Love is the most precious, purest and the holiest feeling of human and true love can be met without resort. “True love in this differs from gold and clay, / that to divide is not to take away” was written by Shelley in his poem Epipsychidion. Shelley believes that the wealth of the spirit is inexhaustible. We can fully express our emotions on varieties of occasions. The more we express, the more we would have to express. In this paper, based on the analysis of Shelley’s life and his works, one may clearly understand Shelley’s view of love. The first part of this paper introduces Shelley’s living background and his study life at Eton，both of which had great influence on Shelley’s attitude towards love and laid the foundation for his view of love. The second part describes in details about Shelley’s love experiences. From Shelley’s two marriage experiences, it is not difficult for us to see that Shelley has always been practicing his view of love in his real life. Then in the third part, Shelley’s two famous love poems are analyzed. The last part of this paper is the summary of Shelley’s view of love and reveals its enlightenment to later generations.
