Abstract
A Thousand Acres published in 1991 is a novel by the American novelist Jane Smiley, who won the Pulitzer Prize for that novel in 1992. This thesis presents an analysis of A Thousand Acres from the perspective of ecofeminism. Ecofeminism is a term that links feminism with ecology. It is aimed at eradicating all kinds of social injustice, especially injustice against women and nature. The novel, A Thousand Acres, is set on a thousand-acre farm in Iowa. Narrating the terrible experiences of women, the book is told through the point of view of a woman, Ginny. The writer intends to describe the heartrending fate of women as well as nature. The writer appeals to the public to pay attention to both women and nature and calls on people to develop a harmonious relationship with our environment. This thesis is presented in six parts. Part one is an introduction to the author, Jane Smiley and the novel A Thousand Acres. Part two provides an explanation of the term ecofeminism. Part three focuses on the hegemony of men exercised over land and women. Part four is a discussion of how women and nature stage their rebellion. Part five gives an analysis of the relationship between women and nature. The last part is the conclusion of this paper. With the above analysis, the writer of this paper hopes to awaken some people in our society out of the discrimination against women and also out of the process of the destruction of our environment. It is very necessary to build a harmonious world, in which both the nature and human beings can coexist.
