Symbolic Meanings in North and South from the Perspective of Multimodal Metaphors

Abstract
North and South is a British television drama series which was produced by BBC and originally broadcasted on BBC One in November and December 2004. It depicts the story of Margaret Hale, a young woman from southern England who had to move to the North after her father decided to leave the clergy. The life became more difficult when they moved to a completely unfamiliar town. The family struggled to adjust themselves to the customs of the industrial town, especially after meeting Mr. Thornton, a proud owner of a family cotton mill who seemed to despise their inferior social position. Along with the deepened understanding of the workers of Milton, Margaret gradually realized that behind the rudeness and bad temper of workers are tenderness and sufferings. The movie reveals the big differences between the north and south by depicting different characters, customs, and local conditions. Metaphors stand out as a major means to reveal the theme of the movie. This thesis will analyze the movie from the perspective of multimodal metaphors, with an intention to point out the process of conflict eliminating between the south and the north and how the south and north realized the fusion.
