Analysis of the Inevitability of Hurstwood’s  Tragedy in Sister Carrie

摘要

西奥多•德莱塞是美国杰出的自然主义作家之一,1900年发表的小说《嘉莉妹妹》也是他的成名作。其中男主人公赫斯特伍德的悲剧命运让人叹息，他曾经衣食无忧，最终却沦为乞丐，饥寒交迫，自杀而终。本论文从赫斯特伍德的婚姻，事业，与嘉莉的私情来分析造成赫斯特伍德悲剧的主观原因和客观原因，从而得出结论：赫斯特伍德的悲剧是必然的。本文由四个部分组成，第一部分为本论文的简介，主要陈述了本论文的主题，第二部分考察了赫斯特伍德悲剧的一生，第三部分从主观和客观两方面分析了造成赫斯特伍德悲剧的原因，最后一部分为全文总结，重申了本论文的主题并指出了这部小说对现代生活的意义。

Abstract

Theodore Dreiser is one of the most outstanding American naturalistic writers, who, in 1900, published his first successful novel, Sister Carrie. The tragic fate of Hurstwood, the hero of the story, makes the readers feel regrettable. This paper will make an analysis of the subjective and objective reasons for Hurstwood’s tragedy from his marriage, career and the affair with Carrie to draw the conclusion that Hurstwood’s tragedy is unavoidable. This paper consists of four parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the paper. The second part surveys the whole life of Hurstwood. The third part analyzes the major causes of Hurstwood’s tragedy in terms of his character and the social environment. The fourth part is the conclusion, reiterating the thesis and summing up the significance of the novel to the common people in modern society.
