摘要

《八月之光》是美国著名作家威廉·福克纳的代表作之一，他在1949年获得诺贝尔文学奖。威廉.福克纳在小说《八月之光》中塑造了莉娜·格雷夫这一人物，在小说中起到了的几个重要作用。首先，这一非人格化的人物形象带领读者们领略全书，构成了整部小说的框架。其次，她起到了深化小说主题的作用。第三，她与小说中其他主要人物形象形成强烈的对比。本文旨在分析莉娜在小说中的多重作用。本文将分为三个部分。第一部分介绍小说内容以及故事背景；第二部分分析莉娜在故事中起到的对比作用，结构作用以及主题作用；最后一部分总结论文并描述这篇小说带给读者的启示。

Abstract

Light in August is one of the representative works of William Faulkner, an famous American writer and a Nobel prize winner in literature in 1949. William Faulkner created Lena Grief in Light in August, playing several functions in the story. Firstly, she is an impersonalized image that takes the readers from the beginning of the story to the end of the story, forming the entire framework. Secondly, she plays an important role in deepening the theme of the novel. Thirdly she is used to make a sharp contrast with other main characters in the book. This paper is aimed at analyzing the multiple roles of Lena in the story and is made up of three parts. The first part gives an introduction to the novel and the social background of the story. The second part analyses the different functions of Lena in the story in terms of the contrasting function, structural function and the thematic function. The last part brings forth the conclusion and the inspiration this novel gives to the readers.
