An Analysis of Sino-US Cultural Differences in Table Manners

摘要

礼仪是社会文化最直接的表现方式，而餐桌礼仪是人们日常交际中的一个主要方面。由于文化背景的不同，各国在餐桌礼仪上的规矩也各有不同。随着经济全球化的发展，中美文化交流日益频繁，学习和运用正确的餐桌礼仪，不仅仅是自身形象的需要，更是民族文化的象征。中国的餐桌礼仪历史悠久，同时我们应当对美国的餐桌礼仪有所了解，以便了解美国的风土人情以及增进双方的交流。本文主要分析中美餐桌礼仪中的座位安排差异、上菜顺序差异、餐具使用差异以及离席礼仪差异等。了解彼此文化差异可以避免不必要的麻烦，以便于恰当得体地进行交际；同时，了解中美餐桌礼仪中的差异不仅可以防止失礼于人，同时更能促进双方的交流与合作。

Abstract

Etiquette is the most direct expression of social culture, and table manners are one of the important aspects of people’s daily communication. Due to distinct cultural backgrounds, there are various rules in table manners all over the world. The rapid development of economic globalization leads to the constant cultural exchanges between China and the United States. Accordingly, correct study and utilization of correct table manners has been not only the needs of shaping our own images, but also a cultural symbol of our nation. Chinese table manners have a long history, at the same time, we should know something about American table manners, so as to learn their local conditions and customs and enhance communications between two sides. This paper mainly focuses on Chinese and American table manners in the aspects of differences in seating arrangement, serving order, tableware and the way of finishing eating. Knowing Sino-US cultural differences can avoid some unnecessary troubles, so as to achieve proper and decent communication. Meanwhile, comprehending the differences of Sino-US table manners can not only prevent people from being impolite, but also improve the communication and cooperation between the two sides.
