威廉·梅克皮斯·萨克雷是一位极富盛名的英国批判现实主义小说家。《名利场》被公认为是萨克雷的杰作，它描绘了在父权社会下—爱米丽亚和蓓基的悲惨命运。本文将基于女性主义理论，着重分析爱米丽亚和贝基的性格特征，从而来揭示传统女性与新女性之间的碰撞。爱米丽亚温顺忠诚，是传统女性的典型代表;蓓基具备传统女性和新女性的双重性格，一方面她十分优雅、多才多艺，遵守男权社会的审美标准，另一方面她又叛逆、有野心,敢于为自己的追求奋斗。因此，小说中传统女性与新女性之间的冲突不仅存在于爱米丽亚与蓓基之间，也存在于蓓基自身。这种冲突反映了女性的困境——女性想要打破男权社会的束缚，但仍然不可避免地沦为其受害者。
