A Comparative Study of Tragic Sense in Mrs. Dalloway and Love in a Fallen City

摘要

英国作家弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫与张爱玲是同时代的女性作家，《达洛维夫人》与《倾城之恋》自出版以来就备受关注，但对《达洛维夫人》和《倾城之恋》的悲剧比较分析的研究则寥寥无几。悲剧不仅仅是人与外部世界的冲突，更是内心世界不同力量的较量。本文首先密切论述了日神和酒神精神，包括起源及二者关系。并通过对比和比较，分别从女主人公的社会地位，性格特点，抗争形式论述其相似性，发现白流苏和克莱丽莎·达洛维同属于社会地位低下的女性，拥有节制、理性的日神性格，在日神精神和酒神的作用下，以幻梦的形式无奈反抗冰冷现实。本文又着重分析二者悲剧冲突的不同，发现白流苏依附于婚姻而从困境中解脱，而克莱丽莎则看到了生存的本质，企图以死亡来摆脱目前的生活状态。以尼采的悲剧理论从日神精神和酒神精神这一视角来细致解读，本文得出结论，每个人只有在维持日神和酒神精神的平衡下，才能化解与外部世界的冲突，与内心世界的冲突，获得内心的平静。

Abstract

British writer Virginia Woolf and Eileen Chang are contemporary female writer. Their works, Mrs. Dalloway and Love in a Fallen City, have attracted great attention since their publication; however the Nietzsche's tragedy theory is seldom used to analyze the work. Tragedy is not only about the collision of human with the outside world, but also the collisions in the inner world. The thesis focuses on Nietzsche's Apollonian Spirit and Dionysian Spirit, mainly representing the spirits’ origins, performance and their relationships. By comparison, it then respectively discusses the two heroines’ social statues, personalities and their struggling forms. Bai Liusu and Clarissa Dalloway, both rational and restraint, have low position at that time. With the Apollonian Spirit and Dionysian Spirit, they desperately fight against the reality by illusion. The differences of their tragic sense concentrate on characters’ tragic collisions and cultural backgrounds, which find that Liusu gets rid of her dilemma by looking for another marriage though lack of true love while Clarissa intends to commit suicide to end all the problems because she recognizes the true meaning of existence. From the prospective of Nietzsche's Apollonian Spirit and Dionysian Spirit, the thesis ends with a conclusion that only when the two spirits are balanced, can people be harmonious with their outside world and inner world.
