Different Face Views between Chinese and American Cultures in Gua Sha Treatment 

摘要

此论文在电影《刮痧》的基础之上，表现了中国文化与美国文化中面子观的差异，并分析了一些特定的方面及导致中美面子观不同的根源。最终在分析结果的基础之上，探索出合适的方法从而化解中美文化矛盾。作为一种社会现象，礼貌不仅具有语言普遍性，而且具有文化特定性和具体性。在中美不同的文化语境下，面子观也不同，而隐藏在跨文化冲突背后的根源在于历史文化等多个领域。跨文化交际在人们的日常生活中起着重要的作用。然而，文化之间的矛盾和价值体系的巨大差异极大地限制了人们的成功沟通。通过分析中国和美国文化在刮痧治疗中的不同价值观以及对中美矛盾的分析，特别是以面子观为例，可以更加强调这种价值观。可以帮助人们在跨文化交际中实现求同存异的方法如下：了解自己，了解沟通语境，寻求理解各种信息系统，发展同情心，鼓励反馈和学习文化适应性。

Abstract

Based on the film ‘The Treatment’ , this paper mainly explains the differences of face views between China and the United States, and analyzes some aspects and their causes, and finally explores the appropriate methods to resolve the cultural conflicts between China and the United States under the analysis of the results. 

As a social phenomenon, courtesy is not only universal in languages, but also culturally specific. In different cultural contexts of China and the United States, the face views are also different. The underlying causes behind cross-cultural differences lie in different histories and cultures. Intercultural communication plays an important role in people's daily lives. However, the great differences in beliefs and values between cultures greatly limit the effective communication of people. Through the analysis of different values and concepts in China and the United States in the treatment of scraping, especially in the face views, the author attempts to highlight the different values.  

The solutions that help people appreciate similarities and accept differences in intercultural communication are as follows: Knowing yourself, understanding the communication environment, seeking to understand various information systems, developing compassion, encouraging feedback, and enhancing cultural resilience.

This thesis consists of six parts. The first part is introduction; the second part explores the movie ‘The Treatment’; the third part discusses the definitions of face views respectively; the fourth part deepens the analysis of face views in the movie ‘The Treatment’; the fifth part summarizes the ways about how to promote the development of Chinese and American cultures; and the last part is conclusion.
