Influence of Different Cultural Background on Documentary Narrative Style—A Comparison Between Exploring China: A Culinary Adventure and A Bite of China

摘要

进入二十一世纪，跨文化交际日益频繁。本文试图从不同文化背景对纪录片的叙事影响分析两部纪录片《发现中国美食之旅》和《舌尖上的中国》。之所以选择叙事学视角研究纪录片，是因为通过纪录片叙事方式，可以对叙事模式进行追踪。因此，本研究对启发人们创作和欣赏纪录片的方式有着重要的意义。本文从叙事风格的角度探讨中西文化的差异。通过从跨文化交际的角度对《舌尖上的中国》和《发现中国美食之旅》的比较分析，我们发现了一些共同点和优点，如主体选择的恰到好处，完美的故事化叙事的应用，特写镜头的大量使用，美食背后的社会文化与生命的扩展。同时，我们也发现了这两系列纪录片各自不同的特点，这部分的发现将主要会在本文的第四部分呈现出来。

Abstract

In the 21st century, intercultural communication is becoming more and more frequent day by day. This thesis attempts to analyze the two documentaries A Bite of China and Exploring China: A Culinary Adventure from the influence on documentary narrative. The reason why the perspective of narratology is chosen to study the documentary is that the narrative pattern could be tracked by studying the way the documentary is narrated. Thus this research has its significance in enlightening people’s way of creating and appreciating documentaries. In this thesis, we discuss the differences between Chinese and Western cultures from the perspective of narrative style. Through the comparative analysis on A Bite of China and Exploring China from the perspective of intercultural communication, we found something common and some advantages of the two documentaries， such as the good selection of subjects, the perfect using of dramatization of narrative skills, the mass use of close-up, social culture behind delicacy and the expansion of life. At the same time we also found the different characteristics of the two documentaries, but these findings will be introduced mainly in Part Four of this thesis.
