A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Reports on Chinese Economy in New York Times

Abstract
The term “Critical Discourse Analysis” was first proposed in the book Language and Control wrote by Roger Flower. As an interdisciplinary approach, CDA makes great contributions to disclose ideological views hidden in all the kinds of discourse, and understand its deep social meanings and backgrounds by analyzing superficial language. In recent years, CDA has drawn great attention of Chinese scholars who start to focus on the analysis of political news.
The research object is economic news about China, selected from New York Times in 2016. According to Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, the study delves into the economic news in the perspective of transitivity, classification, transformation and modality, in order to reveal the relationship between language forms and hidden ideological meanings by dissecting the contexts.
The study finds that economic news usually implicitly conveys different ideological meanings under the driving force of a variety of political groups and vanity. The reports taken from New York Times about China's economy is not comprehensive. It seemingly describes the truth of China's economy, but actually it exaggerates the instability of Chinese economy between the lines by various kinds of language forms. Also it overstates the global consequences caused by China's economy. To some extent, the reports try to shape a Chinese image which is far from the facts and exert a subtle influence on the readers.
Therefore, when reading newspapers and organization, readers should pay attention to training their critical thinking and try to understand the hidden ideologies, to improve the language ability of appreciation while the Chinese government should strengthen the international exchanges and cooperation, to create more opportunities for foreign reporters to understand China. Great efforts need to be made to shape a new image of China.
