On the Translation of Culture-loaded Words in Wei Cheng

摘要

文化负载词是指除其原始意义或概念意义之外蕴含丰富社会文化意义的词语。文学翻译的成败在很大程度上取决于文化负载词处理得是否得当。我国大量文学作品中富含文化负载词，生动形象地反映了独具特色的中华民族文化。由于中西文化之间存在巨大差异，在这些文化负载词的英译过程中，译者经常很难找到与其完全对应的表达。因此，如何充分理解文化负载词的含义并在目标语中进行有效的传达值得译者深思。在中国文学作品英译过程中，译者需根据文化负载词的不同类别，运用多种翻译方法来帮助目标与读者了解中国文化，促进中西文化的交流中国文化的域外传播。本文以钱钟书的《围城》为例，对小说中的文化负载词进行分类，通过具体实例分析译者在翻译不同类型文化负载词时所使用的具体翻译方法和策略。希望对今后中国文学作品的英译和中外文化的交流起到积极的作用。

Abstract

Culture-loaded words refer to the words that have rich social and cultural meanings beyond their original denotative meaning. The success of literary translation depends largely on the dealing of culture-loaded words. Chinese literary works are full of culture-loaded words, which vividly reflect the Chinese culture. However, owing to the huge differences between Chinese and western culture, when translating those culture-loaded words into English, it is really hard for translators to find completely corresponding expressions. How to properly deal with culture-loaded words based on correct understanding of the original words deserves pondering and discussing by translators. When translating Chinese literary works into English, translators should use a variety of translation methods to help target readers fully understand Chinese culture so as to promote the development of cross-cultural communication and dissemination of Chinese culture. Taken Qian Zhongshu’s Wei Cheng as an example, this paper classifies the culture-loaded words in the novel and discusses the translation methods that translators used in the English version with the aim to promote the translation of Chinese literary works and the cultural exchange between China and foreign countries in the future.
