Abstract
Robert Frost (1874-1963) is a well-known American poet of Imagism in the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for 4 times, which claims his reputation as ‘poet Laureate of Vermont’. Frost is adept at conveying lofty thoughts and beliefs with the creation of a fantastic world of imagery in his poems. In general, this thesis will focus on a detailed analysis of images in his poems. The paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter concentrates on how Frost views nature and modern society and some former literary reviews about his works. What will be clarified in chapter two is characteristics and social implications of those images. From chapter three to chapter five, typical images will be elucidated in terms of what symbolic meanings they contain and how they help express the poet’s thoughts. In chapter three, the image ‘snow’ will be interpreted as a symbol of adversity and traditional beliefs. In chapter four, the image ‘flower’ will be analyzed as a symbol of passion and love. In chapter five, the image ‘bird’ will be analyzed as a symbol of sorrow and communication. In the conclusion part, the significant role played by images will be reinforced so as to achieve a better understanding of Robert Frost’s poetry.
