Power and Turn-taking : Sociolinguistic Analysis of Conversations of Nirvana in Fire

Abstract
Having learnt a lot from series of analysis of sociolinguistics, it’s obvious that during these years, the relationship between power and turn-taking has gained much attention from linguists. Such scholars have attached more and more importance to their relationship from a sociolinguistic perspective. Although many discoveries are completed on these items, such a realm still needs more promises than accomplishments.
With the hypotheses of mutual relationship between power and turn-taking, there are a lot questions await systematic inquires. Taking earlier researches on that and sociolinguistic theoretic of conversational analysis into consideration, this paper focuses on the effect multidimensional power has on turn-taking of various aspects and it also includes turn-taking’s function of constructing social interaction. With the aid of a sociolinguistic analysis of conversations between different power classes in Nirvana in Fire, this paper aims to explore their relation according to detailed data analyses.
Concentrating on the hero of Nirvana in Fire, Mei Changsu, his successful change of personal identity throughout the tough power-struggle by the means of turn-taking strategies can be gradually cleared out as the proceeding of the detailed analysis.
The study is carried out by choosing three pairs of characters of multidimensional power from this novel, ensuring that the complicated relationship between each pair is comprised of status discrepancy. Collecting the two-party conversations as samples, despite Mei Changsu, the other paiticipants are all chosen from different power classes. Having the typical linguistic variables for reference, turn-taking features like turn length, initiation, interruption and turn skip can be identified as linguistic variables. Analysis of these samples can validate that the interrelationship between multidimensional power and turn-taking can be fully explained with sociolinguistic framework, multidimensional power reflects turn-taking control while turn-taking helps improve communicating.
