A Study on the Correlation between Metacognitive Strategies and College Students’ Use of American Drama to Improve Their English Listening and Speaking Ability

摘要

元认知策略是由弗拉维尔于20世纪70年代提出一种典型的学习策略,这一策略在大学生自主学习过程中具有重要的指导意义。目前,我国许多大学生在进入大学前掌握了一定的词汇量和语法知识,但是英语听说能力却相对薄弱,英语听说水平整体不高。英语语言学习的最终目的是掌握跨语言交际能力,提高英语交际能力是英语教学的出发点和归宿。大学英语教学改革的一个重要方面就是重视学生的英语综合能力,尤其是英语听说能力的培养。随着网络技术的发展,美剧在大学生群体中颇受欢迎,观看美剧已经成为休闲娱乐的最佳方式之一。针对这一现状,如果能将美剧元素融入到英语学习中,并且辅以科学的元认知学习策略,这不但可以提升大学生学习英语的兴趣,还能有效提高大学生的英语听说能力。

本论文将会从一个新的角度将元认知学习策略与大学生英语听说能力相结合,巧妙地将美剧这一元素融入到英语学习中,并且辅以科学的元认知策略,帮助大学生更好更有效地提高英语听说能力,以使学生能够成为更加积极、高效的英语学习者。

Abstract

Metacognitive strategy is a typical learning strategy, which was put forward by Flavell in the 1970s. It has the guiding significance in the process of developing college students’ autonomous learning ability with its unique contents and features. At present, many college students in China have mastered a certain amount of vocabulary and grammar knowledge before they enter the university, but their English listening and speaking ability is relatively weak. Improving students’ English communicative competence is the starting point and destination of English teaching. An important aspect of the current college English teaching reform is to attach importance to students’ English comprehensive ability, especially their English listening and speaking ability. With the development of network technology, the US drama enjoys a great popularity among the group of college students. Watching the American drama has become one of the best ways of leisure and entertainment for college students. In view of this situation, if the element--US drama, can be integrated into the English language learning, and supplemented by scientific metacognitive learning strategies. It will not only can make the college students become more interested in learning English, but also can effectively improve their English listening and speaking ability.

This paper will from a new perspective combine the metacognitive learning strategies with college students’ English listening and speaking ability, skillfully integrate the element, American drama, into English learning, and use scientific metacognitive strategies. The purpose is to help college students better and effectively improve English listening and speaking ability, so that the college students can become more active and efficient English learners.
