A Comparative Study of the English Websites between Chinese and American World-class Universities

摘要

当代社会，通过互联网搜索、浏览、阅读已成为人们生活中必不可少的一部分，网页文本也逐渐成为了人们接收信息的最主要渠道，在这样的大背景下，一些高校也建立了中英文网页，希望通过这种方式来展现自己，吸引更多的生源，获得更多的国际合作与支持。

本课题将以中美一流高校的英文网页为例，以文化差异为基础，借助功能目的论，概括介绍本课题的一些背景信息。从中国和美国一流高校英文网页的内容、功能和对比研究出发，通过对网站布局、句式结构和文字使用的研究，概括出中美大学英文网页的异同点。并提出由此基础上所发现的出现在中国大学的英文网页中的一些错误，并提出一些修改措施。因此，本论文的主要目的在于引起此类大学的注意，以便将更精确的网页呈现给读者，这同时也可以提升它们自身的国际地位。

Abstract

In contemporary society, it has become an essential part in daily life for people to surf, browse and read online. Also, web text has gradually become the main approach to receiving information. Under this background, some world-class universities build up both Chinese and English websites to present themselves, attract more pupils and access more international cooperation and support.

This project will take English websites of Chinese and American world-class universities as examples and base on culture difference and Skopos theory, then make a brief introduction of these universities’ background information. The study starts from the introduction of the contents, function and comparative study of the English websites of both Chinese and American universities, and through the comparison between website layout, sentence structure and literal usage, some similarities and differences will be drawn out. The errors occur in the Chinese universities will be pointed out and some modifications will be put forward. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to draw some attention of those universities to present more accurate websites for readers and it can also elevate their images in the world.
