Growth and Redemption of Male Characters Influenced By Womanism in The Color Purple

摘要

《紫色》通过主人公西丽及其周围的一些黑人女性经历了与身边男性的种种抗争，最终得到解放的故事，生动地反映了黑人妇女为挣脱男权锁链，改变自身命运，走向新生活而做出的不懈努力和探索。西莉则是“妇女主义”典型代表。沃克的妇女主义并不是凭空产生，而是基于当时女性主义的发展状况而提出来的。

本文旨在通过对女性主义、妇女主义的概述，探讨《紫色》中一直少有谈及的男性成长与救赎。罗伯特先生及其他男性角色的成长及救赎和女主人公的成长息息相关，即男性角色同样受妇女主义的影响。女性主义运动的最终胜利离不开男性的改变——男性真心接受女性主义思想，并同女性一起战斗。因此，研究男性角色的成长是至关重要的。对男性角色的研究成果，可以应用于女性主义对男性的现实改造中，解放男性的思想，完成妇女解放运动的伟大胜利。

Abstract

The novel The Color Purple tells a story that the protagonist Celie and some black women struggle with the men around them, and ultimately win the liberation, which vividly reflects their unremitting efforts and aspiration to liberate from the male bondage, change their own destiny, and live a new life. Celie is a typical example of Womanism. Walker’s womanism is not created out of nothing, but based on the development of feminism at that time.

This article aims to analyze the male characters’ growth and redemption through the statement of womanism. The growth and redemption of Mr. X and other male characters can not be divorced from the heroine’ growth, that is, the male character is equally influenced by womanism. The ultimate victory of woman’s liberation is inseparable from the man’s change, that is, men sincerely accept womanism and support woman’s liberation. Therefore, it is essential to study the man’s growth and redemption. The research results can be applied to transforming men in the reality, emancipating the man’s mind, and completing the great victory of woman's liberation movement.
