An Analysis of the Subtitle Translation of A Bite of Shunde from the Perspective of Communicative Translation Theory_英语论文

摘要

建立在前人研究的基础上,本论文将彼特·纽马克的交际翻译理论应用到中译英的饮食文化纪录片的字幕翻译中。纽马克认为,一个翻译是否成功,在于字幕翻译者是否重视目标语读者,以目标语读者为导向;在于观感效果不管是译语读者还是源语读者是否都能保持一致。纽马克对交际翻译的看法可以概括为四个原则:等效,以译语观众为中心,具备可读性,节约。基于对交际翻译理论的理解,本文将以《寻味顺德》的字幕英译版本作为个案分析材料,探究译者在交际翻译理论指导下采用了何种的翻译策略,以及如何体现交际翻译的特点。最后,本文将论证交际翻译理论在饮食文化纪录片字幕翻译中的可行性。从译者在个案分析中运用直译,意译,缩译,减译和概括等翻译策略,我们可得知运用交际翻译理论指导美食纪录片字幕翻译是切实可行的。此举有利于中译英饮食文化纪录片的翻译实践的指导,也有利于实现“交际”,推动中国饮食文化纪录片在海外的繁荣发展,迈出中国文化走出去的重要一步。

Abstract

On the basis of previous studies, this thesis applies Peter Newmark’s communication translation theory to Chinese-English dietary documentary subtitling. Newmark claimed that reader-oriented and the delivery of effect is marked as a criterion to decide whether a translation is good or bad. It requires translators to stress on readership and make sure that target language audiences would receive the effect as close as source language audiences. Based on Newmark’s opinion on communicative translation, four principles are concluded: equivalent effect, reader-oriented, comprehensibility and economy. The English version of subtitles of A Bite of Shunde is used as a case study to analyze that what kinds of translation strategies are adopted by the translator and how do they reflect four principles. Above all, by following these steps, it tries to demonstrate the applicability of communicative translation theory on dietary documentary subtitling. It is of great practical significance that communicative translation theory can be used to instruct subtitle translation of dietary documentary. Not only will this be propitious to provide guidance for Chinese-English dietary documentary subtitle translation practice but also it will be conducive to achievement of communication, promoting the prosperity of Chinese dietary documentary in oversea market. This will be an important step toward China going global.
