摘要 

严复是我国近代翻译史上学贯中西、具有划时代意义的翻译家，也是我国首创翻译标准的先驱者，其众多译著更是留给后世的宝贵遗产。

本文收集了严复译著《穆勒名学》中的 487 对中英文对照语料，以此创建术语库，并对术语库统计数据加以分析，探索严复在翻译方法、翻译策略和用词等方面的偏好，并进一步分析出其在翻译实践中的适应选择特征。严复术语翻译的适应选择机制包括两个方面，即术语译者的适应选择机制和术语受众的适应选择机制。本文将从这两个方面以一个个具体的翻译个案来详细分析严复的译名特征。通过《穆勒名学》中具体的个案进行归纳与提炼，分析严复译名生成机制及多方面的影响因素。

不管是翻译方法、用词偏好或对译本受众群体的选择,都体现出严复高度的

文化自觉和文化自信。一方面，他希望国民了解和学习西方先进文化；另一方面， 他又坚持以民族语言和文化为本位，批判地借鉴西方学术思想以实现学术近代 化。在整个翻译实践中，严复汇通中西，力图在传播西方思想和保持汉语纯洁性之间寻求平衡。
