A Genre Analysis of Editorial Discourse: A Case Study of US Media's Editorials Denouncing Donald Trump_

Abstract
The editorial is a special genre of news as well as a kind of argumentative essay. Editorials set out to convince the readers the opinions that the writers hold for a specific news event. Since the comments are made for certain news issues, they are placed in particular situational contexts that determine the communicative purposes to some extent. The present study investigates ten editorials published on August 16, 2018 denouncing President of the United States, Donald Trump selected from the “war” between the media and President Trump. The analysis is carried out based on the genre theories put forward by Bhatia and Swales to study the situational context, the communicative purpose and the shared structure of this genre. The study has found that these editorials include three obligatory moves and nine steps. This shared structure enables the American news media to make their voice heard successfully.
