Constructing the Imagined Communities——A Case Study of Waverley_英语论文

Abstract
Sir Walter Scott is an English novelist and poet, who contributed greatly to the rise of historical novels in Europe. His novels draw on Scottish history, England and even other European countries, displaying the culture and social life of Englanders and Scots from the Middle Ages to the Bourgeois Revolution and its aftermath to readers. Waverley marks his transition from poetry to historical novels, and is often regarded as the first historical novel in the west. It draws on the Rebellion of 1745, portraits the beautiful Scottish scenery and praises the high spirits of Highlanders.
This thesis analyzes Waverley on the basis of Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Community theory. It interprets how and why the writer converged history and novels to build a national community for his country Scotland, and may offer some insights into why the kingdoms have been on and off in history. Hopefully, it can enrich researches into Walter Scott and his works, revivify the Scottish culture in a homogenizing British world, and provoke attention to national imagination. By analyzing the Scottish nationality that is active in novels, this paper also tries to shed some light on researches into the current relationship of the United Kingdoms.
