A Study of Translation Strategies Adopted in Chinglish_英语论文

Abstract
As a kind of special English with Chinese characteristics, Chinglish is a common linguistic phenomenon existing among Chinese EFL (English as Foreign language) learners of every level. Though many Chinese EFL learners hope to avoid Chinglish expressions, they apply Chinglish in communication without awareness due to the influence of mother tongue. However, some Chinglish have been accepted in English countries in recent years. This study makes an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in Chinglish, especially those Chinglish accepted by English dictionaries, in order to understand the acceptability of Chinglish. To be specific, we classify the Chinglish we collected into three kinds: accepted Chinglish, Chinglish between accepted and unaccepted, and unaccepted Chinglish. After detailed analysis, accepted Chinglish is found to be mostly the result of application of transliteration strategy. Most of the Chinglish between accepted and unaccepted uses literal translation strategy and word-for-word translation is adopted in the majority of unaccepted Chinglish. Finally we conclude that foreignization is adopted in most of Chinglish. Transliteration strategy helps to reach the acceptability of some Chinglish. Meanwhile unique cultural meaning and frequent use make a difference as well.
