Abstract
This paper focuses on the analysis of Leonardo’s 2014 United Nations Climate Summit speech from the perspective of Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction theory, aiming to help readers understand and evaluate the speech regarding its suitability, also to provide some significant guidance for readers to make better speeches.
The systemic-functional grammar of Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday contains three metafunctions: the interpersonal metafunction, ideational (experiential) metafunction and textual metafunction. The interpersonal metafunction is to interact with others to build and keep the appropriate social links with them, which can influence their behavior and convey their own opinions on things.
This study mainly involves the analysis of mood, modality and personal pronouns of the interpersonal meaning. Through analyzing the speech, the author finds out that Leonardo employs plenty of mood, modal verbs and personal pronouns to realize the interpersonal function in order to call on the leaders to unite together to tackle related issues of climate change, mitigate global warming, and reach a global climate agreement in 2015.
